Therapy for Disordered Eating

Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology | Menai and Sutherland Shire

Disordered eating refers to a range of unhealthy eating behaviours that may not meet the full criteria for an eating disorder, yet can still have significant impact on emotional and physical health. These behaviours can include restrictive dieting, meal skipping, binge eating, compulsive eating, vomiting, or misuse of laxatives, diuretics or supplements.

Diet culture and unrealistic body image ideals often contribute to the development of disordered eating by promoting harmful beliefs around body size, food and self-worth. Over time, these patterns can distort a person’s relationship with food and lead to fatigue, disrupted sleep, difficulty concentrating and emotional distress. In many cases, disordered eating is a precursor to clinically diagnosable eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our registered psychologists and counsellors provide compassionate, evidence-based eating disorder therapy for people across the Sutherland Shire including Bangor, Illawong, Engadine, Alfords Point, and surrounding suburbs, as well as clients throughout Sydney, via secure online counselling.

Recognising disordered eating early can help prevent escalation and promote lasting change. Therapy at Evolving Minds is trauma-informed, person-centred and tailored to each person’s needs, providing a safe and respectful space to understand what sits beneath disordered eating patterns.

Our eating disorder counselling in the Sutherland Shire supports people whose experiences  may be linked to trauma, anxiety, perfectionismlow self-esteem or poor body image. Sessions focus on increasing emotional awareness, strengthening self-compassion, and supporting gradual, sustainable change.

Treatment may draw on evidence-based therapies including:

These approaches support both emotional regulation and behaviour change, helping people rebuild trust with food and their bodies.

Our team works collaboratively with GPs, dietitians, and psychiatrists to ensure care is coordinated and responsive to both psychological and physical needs. Vanessa, a Credentialed Eating Disorder Clinician with the Australian and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders (ANZAED), leads our eating disorder work, supported by clinicians who have undertaken additional professional development in this area. Together, we provide therapy that aligns with current clinical guidelines and is delivered within a coordinated, multidisciplinary framework of care.  This integrated approach allows for early support, tailored intervention, and continuity of care.
