Counselling for Mood Disorders

Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology | Menai and Sutherland Shire

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide evidence-based therapy for mood disorders across the Sutherland Shire, including Bangor, Illawong, Engadine and surrounding suburbs. Sessions are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online therapy across Sydney and Australia.

Mood disorders involve ongoing changes in mood that can affect how a person feels, thinks and manages everyday life. Individuals may experience persistent low mood, loss of interest in activities that once felt meaningful, emotional highs and lows, irritability, or a sense of disconnection from themselves and others. These shifts can make daily tasks feel harder and reduce enjoyment, motivation and overall quality of life.

Common mood disorders include:

• Major Depressive Disorder
• Bipolar Disorder
• Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia)
• Seasonal Affective Disorder
• Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

Mood disorders often occur alongside experiences such as anxiety, trauma, or prolonged stress, which can intensify emotional strain and make daily life feel more overwhelming.  Mood changes can also occur during pregnancy and after birth. You can learn more on our Perinatal Counselling page.

Living with a mood disorder can affect motivation, energy, concentration, sleep and self-esteem. It may place strain on relationships, make work or study more challenging, and lead to withdrawal from activities or social connection. For some, distress can become intense and difficult to manage alone.

With the right therapy, it is possible to better understand these experiences, regulate mood and begin rebuilding stability and quality of life.

Therapy focuses on understanding mood patterns, strengthening emotional regulation and developing practical strategies to support stability and recovery. Sessions are collaborative and responsive to individual needs, supporting awareness, connection and resilience over time.

You can learn more about related experiences on our Depression Counselling and Anxiety Therapy pages.

Our psychologists and counsellors draw on a range of evidence-based therapies to support mood regulation and emotional stability, including:

• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
• Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
• Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
• Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
• Schema Therapy
• Mindfulness-based approaches
• Somatic therapies where appropriate
