Understanding School Avoidance and School Refusal
Psychological Therapy in Menai and the Sutherland Shire
At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide evidence-based, neuro-affirming therapy for children, adolescents and families experiencing school avoidance across the Sutherland Shire and southern Sydney. Sessions are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online appointments across Australia.
School avoidance occurs when a child or adolescent experiences significant emotional distress about attending school. For some young people, anxiety about school becomes so overwhelming that attending can feel unsafe or unmanageable. This distress may lead to frequent absences, difficulty getting ready for school, morning meltdowns, trouble entering the classroom, or complete school refusal.
Some parents first notice these difficulties when their child refuses to go to school or becomes extremely distressed at the idea of attending.
For many young people, school avoidance is linked to anxiety, including Separation Anxiety, Social Anxiety, performance anxiety or Generalised Anxiety Disorder. Other contributing factors may include bullying, peer difficulties, academic pressure, learning differences or Perfectionism.
For some children, school avoidance may also be linked with Separation Anxiety, particularly when leaving home or caregivers feels overwhelming.
Signs of School Avoidance and School Refusal
School avoidance is also common among neurodivergent children and adolescents, including those with ADHD, Autism, sensory processing differences, executive functioning challenges or learning differences. Busy classrooms, unpredictable routines, social expectations and sensory overwhelm can feel exhausting and difficult to manage.
Some young people may describe feeling unsafe, panicked, overwhelmed or shut down at the thought of going to school. Others may experience physical symptoms such as racing heart, nausea or dizziness, similar to what occurs during panic attacks.
Understanding What Sits Beneath School Avoidance
At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology, therapy focuses on understanding what may sit beneath school avoidance and what each young person may need to feel safe enough to re-engage.
This may include identifying fears, sensory triggers, learning pressures, social stress, or difficulties with emotional regulation. Therapy supports young people to better understand their responses, reduce anxiety and overwhelm, and develop coping strategies that support gradual and sustainable re-engagement with school routines.
Parents may also benefit from approaches such as Reparative Parenting, which focuses on strengthening emotional safety, trust and co-regulation within the parent–child relationship.
