Binge Eating Disorder is a recognised and often misunderstood eating disorder and mental health condition. It involves recurring episodes of eating large amounts of food, often quickly or in secret, accompanied by a sense of loss of control. These episodes are commonly followed by feelings of guilt, shame or emotional distress, and many people feel trapped in a cycle of binge eating and attempts to regain control around food.

Binge Eating Disorder May Present As:

  • eating large amounts of food in a short period of time

  • feeling unable to stop or control eating

  • eating when not physically hungry

  • continuing to eat beyond fullness

  • eating alone or in secret

  • strong feelings of shame, guilt or distress after eating

For some people, binge eating is linked to coping with difficult emotions such as anxiety, trauma, or chronic stress.

Understanding Binge Eating

Many people living with BED describe using food to manage emotions such as sadness, boredom, loneliness or overwhelm. Over time, patterns of binge eating may become connected with self-criticism, shame or difficulties with emotional regulation.

For some individuals, binge eating may also occur alongside ADHD or Autism, where differences in impulse control, sensory experiences or emotional regulation interact with eating behaviours.

While BED is not always driven by body image concerns, it can still affect self-esteem, relationships and day-to-day functioning.
