Binge Eating Disorder Therapy in the Sutherland Shire

Binge eating can feel difficult to control or hard to stop, and is often followed by guilt, shame or distress. Some people experience clear episodes of eating large amounts of food, while for others it shows up as ongoing emotional or irregular eating that is harder to name. Binge eating disorder therapy can help make sense of these patterns and support change over time.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide evidence-based binge eating disorder therapy in Menai and across the Sutherland Shire for children, adolescents and adults. Sessions are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online appointments across Australia.

What is binge eating disorder?

Binge eating disorder is a recognised mental health condition involving recurring episodes of eating large amounts of food in a short period, usually with a sense of loss of control and emotional distress afterwards. Unlike some other eating disorders, it does not typically involve regular attempts to compensate for the eating, such as purging.

These episodes are often linked to how a person manages emotions, stress or difficult experiences, rather than to hunger. Over time, the pattern can feel increasingly hard to interrupt, even when someone wants things to be different.

What's the difference between binge eating and disordered eating?

Binge eating disorder is a specific, diagnosable condition, while disordered eating is a broader term for a range of irregular or unhelpful patterns around food that don't meet the criteria for a formal diagnosis. Both can affect a person's wellbeing and their relationship with food.

Disordered eating might include emotional eating, restricting and then overeating, rigid food rules, or eating patterns that feel inconsistent or out of step with hunger. These patterns may not have a diagnostic label, however they can still cause distress and affect daily life.

Understanding which pattern you're experiencing can help guide the most appropriate therapy.

How can therapy help with binge eating disorder?

Therapy for binge eating disorder focuses on the relationship between emotions, thoughts and eating, rather than on food alone. It can help you recognise triggers, understand the role emotions play, and build more flexible, consistent patterns around eating.

Our clinicians draw on a range of evidence-based eating disorder therapy approaches, including CBT-E, DBT-informed and ACT approaches, alongside attachment and trauma-informed therapy.

Where appropriate, therapy may also involve collaboration with a GP, dietitian or psychiatrist to support coordinated care.

Our team includes an ANZAED credentialed eating disorder clinician, and all clinicians have completed additional training in eating disorders.
