Dialectical Behavioural Therapy or DBT is a structured therapy founded by Marsha Linehan. It is a four part therapy consisting of:
1. Individual Psychotherapy
2. DBT Skills Training
3. Phone Coaching
4. Consultation for therapist by therapists
At Evolving Minds Counselling we provide individual psychotherapy and are happy to work with DBT Groups you may be involved with. We have completed comprehensive face-to-face training in DBT and work collaboratively with other allied health professionals.
DBT is helpful in treating a range of presentations including:
Borderline Personality Disorder
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
The four skill modules of DBT consisting of:
Mindfulness is not meditation, rather it is noticing emotions and feelings and being able paying attention. Going with the flow, letting go of trying to control emotions by paying attention to the moment.
Distress Tolerance skills allow clients to sit with uncomfortable emotions and feelings. This includes working through crisis and accepting things you cannot change, rather than using strategies that would normally allow avoidance.
Interpersonal Effectiveness focuses on relationships, including validating others, forming healthy relationships and walking the middle ground.
Emotional Regulation teaches strategies to regulate emotions by noticing triggers or prompting events.
