Adolescence is a time when young people strive to find their own identities, come to terms with their changing bodies, changing relationships and develop the ability to critically reason.  It is also a time of confusion, stress and conflict as they start to take on adult roles and responsibilities and rely more on peers for support.

Self Harm

Self Harm is a way of expressing painful emotions

Often the purpose of self harm is to provide relief, control or express feelings and/or emotions and while most people who self harm do not intend to end their lives, self harm can result in death. It is also a way of expressing painful emotions that are often overwhelming. 


Self harm takes many forms including:

  • cutting

  • biting

  • hitting

  • burning 

  • drugs including prescription medication

  • alcohol

  • sex

  • binge eating

  • starvation 

Typically self harm occurs in adolescence, however children and adults may also use self harm as a coping mechanism. Some people only self harm once, while others do so routinely due to their level of distress. 


Counselling for self harm aims to understand why a person is self harming and the function it serves.  Triggers are discovered and more positive coping strategies are put in place to help with the overwhelming feelings.  It is important to know you do not have to face these emotions alone and there are people who want to help.
