Child Behaviour Therapy in the Sutherland Shire

If your child’s behaviour has become harder to manage, more intense, or is starting to affect home or school, it can be difficult to know what to do next.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors work with children, adolescents and families across the Sutherland Shire and southern Sydney. We take the time to understand what may be sitting beneath the behaviour, and what your child might be finding difficult to express.

Changes in behaviour often reflect a shift in how a child is coping, and can be explored through child behaviour counselling. This might relate to anxiety, frustration, feeling overwhelmed, or difficulty managing strong emotions.

Common behavioural patterns

You might notice:

  • Aggression or verbal conflict

  • Emotional outbursts or meltdowns

  • Withdrawal or avoidance

  • Lying or rule-breaking

  • Difficulty following instructions

  • School refusal or avoidance

  • Conflict with parents, teachers or peers

Over time, these patterns can impact relationships at home, how your child experiences school, and their sense of confidence.

Understanding your child’s behaviour

Behaviour does not occur in isolation. It is shaped by a child’s emotional world, their developmental stage, and what is happening around them.

For some young people, behaviour changes are linked to anxiety, low mood, or feeling overwhelmed by expectations, social situations, or school demands. At times, these experiences may sit alongside anxiety counselling or trauma counselling.

In some cases, behaviour may also be influenced by how a young person experiences themselves. This can include difficulties with confidence, self-worth, perfectionism.

Behaviour may also reflect how a child processes and responds to their environment. Differences such as ADHD or autism can influence attention, communication, and emotional regulation.

There are also times where behaviour reflects a deeper level of distress. Some young people may withdraw, become increasingly reactive, or find it difficult to express what they are feeling.

Behaviour challenges at school

For many children and adolescents, behavioural changes become more noticeable in the school environment. The combination of academic expectations, peer relationships, and daily transitions can place pressure on a child’s ability to cope.

Some young people may find it difficult to manage frustration, keep up with learning demands, or navigate friendships. Others may begin to withdraw or avoid school when anxiety, overwhelm, or social stress becomes too much to manage.

At times, what is seen at school can look quite different to what is happening at home. Some children work hard to hold things together during the day and then release that tension once they are in a more familiar environment. Others may struggle more visibly in structured settings where expectations feel harder to meet.

Understanding how your child is experiencing school can help guide responses that support both their learning and emotional development.

When to consider counselling

You may consider counselling if behaviour feels more frequent, more intense, or harder to manage than it has been in the past.

This might include ongoing emotional outbursts, withdrawal, difficulties at school, or patterns that do not seem to shift despite your efforts. It may also relate to anxiety, stress, or earlier experiences that continue to have an impact.

Often, parents describe a sense that something is not quite right, even if it is difficult to name. Having a space to talk this through can help bring clarity and direction.
