Family Counselling and Therapy in the Sutherland Shire

When communication becomes difficult or conflict increases at home, it can be hard to know how to move forward. Family counselling helps make sense of what's happening and supports clearer ways of communicating.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our family therapists, psychologists and counsellors work with parents, children and adolescents across the Sutherland Shire and southern Sydney. Sessions are available in person at our Menai practice or online.

Understanding family dynamics

Families move through many stages, from early parenting and the arrival of a new baby, to adolescence, blended households, separation, and later life changes involving ageing parents or shifting roles within the family.

These transitions can place pressure on relationships and affect how family members relate to one another. This might include navigating a teenager's growing independence, changes in family structure, or supporting older family members and the responsibilities that come with this.

Family counselling focuses on understanding patterns within the family and supporting more effective ways of communicating and responding .  This may also include supporting relationships between parents and children, particularly where behaviour, emotional regulation, or communication has become difficult.

When families seek counselling

Families often come to counselling when:

  • Communication feels strained or conflict is hard to resolve

  • Relationships feel distant or disconnected

  • Parenting challenges are creating tension

  • A blended family or separation is bringing up new dynamics

  • Separation and co-parenting arrangements

  • A child or adolescent's struggles are affecting the whole family

Our approach

We focus on understanding the patterns within your family and finding ways to communicate and respond that feel more manageable for everyone. This may include working with parents and children together, or alongside individual support such as child behaviour therapy, adolescent counselling, or anxiety counselling.

Our clinicians draw on evidence-based approaches, including family systems therapy, attachment-informed approaches, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and Gottman Method Couples Therapy where couples work is part of family counselling.

Getting started
