Understanding and Overcoming Social Anxiety

At Evolving Minds, we offer counselling services for people of all ages who are dealing with social anxiety.

Social anxiety often manifests in various ways, including:

  • Feeling scared or nervous in social situations, especially when meeting new people.

  • Physical reactions like blushing, sweating, or stuttering when around others.

  • Finding it hard to start or keep relationships going.

  • Feeling anxious or worried about speaking in public.

  • Avoiding social events because of a fear of being judged.

  • Using alcohol or drugs as a coping strategy.

  • Thoughts of suicide or attempts at self-harm.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has proven to be very effective in helping manage social anxiety in the long term. This evidence-based approach involves challenging negative thought patterns and enhancing emotional awareness.

For Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to bring lasting results, it's crucial to to practice new skills and complete tasks assigned outside of therapy sessions.

Other therapies that can help manage social anxiety include mindfulness based therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).
