Footpath with the words "passion led us here"

When looking for therapy, many people first think of seeing a psychologist. However, Accredited Mental Health Social Workers (AMHSWs) are also recognised mental health professionals in Australia who provide evidence-based therapy and support for a wide range of mental health presentations.

To become an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, clinicians must meet rigorous accreditation standards set by the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW). This includes completing a recognised social work qualification, demonstrating extensive experience in mental health practice, and undertaking ongoing professional development to maintain accreditation.

What Qualifications Does an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker Have?

To achieve accreditation, Mental Health Social Workers must demonstrate a minimum of 3,360 hours of mental health practice experience and at least two years of full-time equivalent post-qualifying experience in a mental health setting.

This extensive clinical experience provides a strong foundation in mental health assessment, case formulation, therapeutic intervention, and treatment planning.

Accredited Mental Health Social Workers are also required to participate in ongoing professional development and supervision, helping ensure their practice remains informed by current evidence and best-practice standards in mental health.

Holistic and Accessible Services

Accredited Mental Health Social Workers are trained to understand mental health within the broader context of a person's life. While emotional and psychological symptoms are an important focus, AMHSWs also consider the impact of factors such as relationships, family dynamics, work, physical health, trauma and social support networks.

This holistic perspective recognises that mental health is influenced by a range of interconnected factors. By considering both the individual and their environment, AMHSWs can develop treatment plans that are tailored to each person's unique circumstances and goals.

Medicare-Rebated Mental Health Support

Accredited Mental Health Social Workers are recognised Medicare providers under the Better Access initiative. With a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from a GP, eligible clients can access Medicare rebates for therapy sessions.

Medicare recognition places Accredited Mental Health Social Workers alongside psychologists and other eligible mental health professionals within the Better Access initiative.

Evidence-Based Therapies at Evolving Minds

At Evolving Minds, our Accredited Mental Health Social Workers provide evidence-based therapy for a range of mental health presentations. Depending on individual needs and goals, this may include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Radically Open DBT (RO-DBT), and other evidence-based approaches.

Clinicians draw on a range of evidence-based approaches, selecting strategies that best align with each person's presenting challenges, circumstances, and goals.

Conclusion

Accredited Mental Health Social Workers are highly qualified mental health professionals who provide evidence-based therapy and support across a range of settings. Their training and experience enable them to address both the psychological and broader social factors that can influence mental health, offering a comprehensive approach to care.
