Eating Disorder Counselling
in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

When concerns around food, eating or body image begin to take up more space, it can be difficult to know what is happening or when to seek help. For some people, this may look like restriction, binge eating, or feeling out of control around food. For others, it may feel less clear, but something does not feel right.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide eating disorder counselling for people across the Sutherland Shire. Sessions are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online appointments. We work with children, adolescents, adults and older adults.

Understanding Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are not only about food. They often reflect how a person is coping with emotions, stress, identity, and a sense of control.

There is strong evidence that eating disorders also have a biological and genetic basis. They are influenced by systems in the body related to appetite, mood, reward and metabolism, rather than a single cause.

For some people, patterns such as restriction, binge eating or food avoidance develop as a way of managing difficult thoughts or feelings. Over time, these patterns can feel increasingly fixed or hard to change, even when the person wants things to be different.

Eating disorders are shaped by a combination of biological, psychological and environmental factors. This can include anxiety, perfectionism, emotional regulation, low self-esteem, and past experiences.

What this can look like

Eating disorders can present in different ways.  Some people may:

  • Restrict food or avoid certain foods

  • Experience binge eating or feel out of control around food

  • Engage in strict or rigid eating patterns

  • Feel intense distress about body image

  • Become preoccupied with weight, shape or food

For others, the signs may be less obvious, including ongoing worry about food, changes in eating patterns, or increasing distress related to body image.

Understanding risk and contributing factors

Eating disorders rarely develop from one cause. They are often influenced by a combination of factors over time.

Some people may have personality traits such as perfectionism, high self-criticism, or sensitivity to stress. Others may experience low self-esteem or ongoing dissatisfaction with their body.

Societal pressures can also play a role. Messages around body shape, weight and appearance can contribute to body dissatisfaction and increase vulnerability to disordered eating behaviours.

Dieting is also a significant risk factor. Restrictive or extreme eating patterns can increase the likelihood of developing an eating disorder, particularly during adolescence when identity and body image are still developing.

Eating disorders can also develop alongside experiences such as anxiety counselling or trauma counselling, and may be linked to how a person manages emotions or responds to stress.

When to consider counselling

You may wish to consider counselling if:

  • Thoughts about food, weight or body image feel overwhelming

  • Eating patterns feel difficult to manage or interrupt

  • Restriction, binge eating or food avoidance is affecting daily life

  • Eating behaviours are linked to anxiety, shame or emotional distress

  • Concerns about food or body image are affecting relationships, work or study

Often, people describe a sense that something is not quite right, even if it is difficult to explain.
