Counselling for Binge Eating
in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

When eating begins to feel out of control or difficult to stop, it can be confusing and distressing. Some people notice patterns that are often followed by guilt, shame or discomfort. Others feel caught between trying to “be good” with food and finding this impossible to maintain.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors work with people across the Sutherland Shire and southern Sydney who experience binge eating episodes and patterns of disordered eating. Sessions are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online appointments.

The role of diet culture

Diet culture continues to shape how people think about food, appetite and their bodies. More recently, there has also been a growing focus on reducing appetite or overriding hunger cues as a way of managing weight. While this may be presented as a health-focused approach, it can further reinforce the idea that natural hunger signals should be suppressed or controlled.

Research shows that restrictive eating and dieting are associated with an increased risk of binge eating and disordered eating, and can make it more difficult to trust internal cues or respond to the body in a flexible way.

Understanding binge eating

Binge eating involves episodes of eating that feel difficult to control, often accompanied by a sense of loss of control and emotional distress. Unlike bulimia, binge eating does not involve compensatory behaviours such as purging or over-exercising.

Disordered eating is a broader term used to describe patterns of eating that may not meet the criteria for a specific eating disorder but still affect a person’s relationship with food, body image and themselves.

While binge eating tends to involve more defined episodes, disordered eating may show up as ongoing or inconsistent patterns, such as restriction, overeating, or difficulty responding to hunger and fullness cues.

When to consider counselling

You may wish to consider counselling if:

  • Eating feels difficult to control or interrupt

  • Patterns of overeating are becoming more frequent

  • Eating is linked to stress, emotions or coping

  • Feelings of guilt or shame follow eating

  • Concerns about food or body image are affecting daily life

For some, these patterns may sit alongside anxiety, perfectionism, trauma, neurodiversity and body image.

Binge Eating Counselling in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors work with people experiencing binge eating across the Sutherland Shire, including Miranda, Caringbah, Engadine and surrounding suburbs. Our team includes an ANZAED credentialed clinician, and all clinicians have completed specialised training in eating disorders.

We focus on understanding each person’s experience and working in a way that feels manageable and appropriate over time. Therapy may involve developing more flexible patterns around eating, strengthening emotional regulation, and supporting a more stable and consistent relationship with food.

Our clinicians draw on evidence-based eating disorder therapies, including CBT-E, DBT-informed approaches, ACT, and attachment- and trauma-informed ways of working.

Where appropriate, therapy may also involve collaboration with a GP, dietitian or psychiatrist to support coordinated care. This work sits within our broader eating disorder counselling, allowing us to support both specific eating patterns and the underlying factors that may be contributing.
