Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy

Psychological Therapy in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

Neurodiversity recognises that people think, learn, and respond in different ways. These differences can influence attention, emotions, relationships, and how someone manages day-to-day life.

We work with children, adolescents, and adults from Menai and across the Sutherland Shire.

We take a neurodiversity-affirming approach. This involves helping each person understand how they think and respond, recognising patterns, and making sense of what may be getting in the way so day-to-day life feels more manageable.

What we mean by neurodiversity-affirming approach

A neurodiversity-affirming approach recognises that:

  • Differences are not deficits

  • The environment often plays a significant role in how someone is feeling

  • Emotional and behavioural responses make sense in context

  • Change is about finding approaches that feel more manageable

The focus is on increasing understanding, developing practical strategies, and helping day-to-day life feel more manageable.

How we work

Therapy is tailored to each person, their goals, and their context. This may include:

  • Emotional regulation and managing overwhelm

  • Navigating school, work, and daily demands

  • Understanding attention and executive functioning patterns

  • Reducing shame and self-criticism

  • Improving communication and relationships

  • Working with parents to better understand and respond to their child

The aim is to identify what is getting in the way and develop approaches that are realistic and aligned with  each person’s strengths.

ADHD

Many people we see have ADHD or experience differences in attention and executive functioning.

This may include:

  • Difficulty sustaining focus

  • Challenges with organisation and time management

  • Emotional intensity or reactivity

  • Difficulty initiating or completing tasks

Therapy focuses on understanding these patterns, developing practical strategies, and reducing the impact of these challenges in everyday life.
