School Avoidance Therapy in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide therapy for children, adolescents and families experiencing school avoidance across the Sutherland Shire and southern Sydney. Sessions are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online appointments across Australia.

School avoidance occurs when a child or adolescent experiences significant emotional distress about attending school. For some young people, this distress becomes so overwhelming that attending can feel unsafe or unmanageable.

Common experiences of school avoidance

School avoidance may include:

  • Refusing or avoiding school attendance

  • Emotional distress in the mornings

  • Difficulty separating from home or caregivers

  • Physical symptoms such as nausea, dizziness or racing heart

  • Panic, overwhelm or shutdown responses

  • Difficulty entering or remaining in the classroom

Some parents first notice these difficulties when their child becomes increasingly distressed at the idea of attending school.

Understanding what may sit beneath school avoidance

School avoidance is often linked to underlying experiences rather than the school itself.

For many young people, this may include anxiety, such as separation anxiety, social anxiety, performance anxiety or generalised anxiety.

Other contributing factors may include:

  • Bullying or peer difficulties

  • Academic pressure or learning differences

  • Perfectionism

  • Emotional regulation difficulties

School avoidance is also common among neurodivergent children and adolescents, including those with ADHD, autism, sensory sensitivities or executive functioning differences.

Busy classrooms, unpredictable routines and social expectations can feel overwhelming and difficult to manage.

  • Showing increasing anxiety or withdrawal

  • Having difficulty separating from home

  • Experiencing physical symptoms linked to school-related stress

School avoidance therapy in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

Therapy focuses on understanding what may be contributing to school avoidance and supporting a gradual, manageable return to school where appropriate.

This may include identifying triggers such as anxiety, sensory overwhelm, learning challenges or social stress, and developing strategies that support re-engagement over time.

Our clinicians work collaboratively with young people, parents and, where appropriate, schools and support teams.

Approaches may include:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Parent guidance and coaching

  • Creative and play-based approaches

  • Gradual return planning

Parents may also benefit from approaches such as reparative parenting, which focuses on strengthening emotional safety, trust and co-regulation within the parent–child relationship.
