Therapy for Challenging Behaviour
At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology
Challenging behaviours in children and adolescents can significantly impact relationships at home, school and the broader community. Children may display behaviours such as aggression, avoidance, meltdowns, or lying as ways of expressing distress or managing emotional overwhelm.
These behaviours may stem from underlying factors such as developmental changes, anxiety, trauma, family stress, or difficulties navigating social and academic expectations. In some cases, neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), or learning difficulties may impact how a child communicates, copes and responds to their environment.
Understanding the function behind behaviour is essential for providing appropriate and effective support.
At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology, we support children and adolescents experiencing behavioural and emotional difficulties. Our clinicians work closely with parents, and where appropriate, schools and other professionals to create a coordinated support plan.
We draw on a range of evidence-based therapies to support emotional regulation, resilience and prosocial development. Treatment is tailored to the child’s developmental stage, strengths and goals, and may include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), parent-led interventions, play-based approaches or trauma-informed care. Where school-related issues arise, we also support children experiencing school refusal, separation anxiety, or school-based anxiety.
Services are delivered from our practice in the Sutherland Shire, where we provide a safe and supportive environment for children, young people and their families.
